Why Sri Lanka is firmly on the kitesurfing map

There are so many things we love about Kite Surfing. It’s freeing, exciting, and of course a great workout. Recently, we took a group out to the very remote and attractive village of Kalpitiya in North West of the country. Our adventure to Sri Lanka and discovery of some of the most extraordinary kitesurfing shores in the world, came as a bit of a surprise.

Our journey began when about 30 of us kitesurfers left from Ireland. Our group included individuals from UK, Switzerland, and Australia. We were ready for a true adventure. We took off from Dublin and flew 13 hours to Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. From there, we took a two-and-a-half-hour minibus ride to Kalpitiya. We arrived at our home in Kitesurfing Lanka for the next 10 days and were warmly welcomed by the  owners Dill and Leo.

What struck us, and what makes us believe that Sri Lanka is firmly on the Kitesurfing map, was the water and environment. The unspoiled paradise that is North West Sri Lanka was stunning. There is approximately 100 meters of sand bars separating the sea and the lagoon around the best area for conducting our kitesurfing lessons. The beautiful water and the exceptional landscape, make Sri Lanka the perfect place to learn how to kitesurf, or to take your skills to the next level while enjoying Yoga every morning before breakfast

What really made our trip special, however, was our group. We couldn’t have enjoyed the trip more thanks to the fantastic crew that came with us. having small kids myself i found it hard after a few days and seeing how family friendly the camp is, the staff were amazing with the kids and families staying there. I wont be leaving the kids at home next time

Towards the end of our trip we took to group on an over night stay in a remote sandbar 1.5hrs boat ride. it was truly the best place I’ve ever kitesurfed, offshore consistent wind with butter flat water we couldn’t have asked for more, I’ve never seen so many beginners learn riding upwind so fast just so they wouldn’t be rescued by the boat.
